Stoke Gifford TKD at the Scottish Championships
View all articles

On Saturday 16th March members and family from Stoke Gifford TKD travelled up to Motherwell, North Lanarkshire to attend the UKITF Scottish Championships.

We were accompanied on the coach by members and friends from Thornbury TKD and Torbay TKD. The seven hour journey flew by and after travelling through some amazing scenery in the Lake District and the snow covered hills as we reached Scotland, we finally arrived our hotel, just in time to gather in the restaurant to relax, chat and watch England get thrashed by Wales in the rugby (the least said about that the better!).

Everyone was up bright and early on Sunday morning and we headed over to the unusually shaped Ravenscraig Sports Facility to get ready for the day ahead and, for those competing, to get weighed in.

The competition started promptly and straight away the Kids Kickers girls began to collect some medals as their hard work in training paid off, with Connie gaining silver, Esme bronze and Lucie silver in patterns.

The cadet boys followed and all gave great performances in the degree patterns. Joseph achieved bronze, Ben C silver and Ollie gold. Sarah soon joined in with a gold and Phoebe followed with a bronze. Chloe then triumphed in her category and added another gold to the tally.

With the patterns completed the sparring started. Everyone worked really hard in every bout and each were rewarded with a place on the podium. Sarah earned a silver, Ben C and Ollie bronze, Joseph bronze, Kieran gold, Ben BA silver, Connie gold, Esme silver, Lucie gold and Chloe gold.

The final events of the day were special technique and power. The cadet boys tried their best in special technique and Phoebe earned a well deserved bronze in power.

The organisation and tireless effort of the Tournament and Umpire committees is greatly appreciated.  Alison was kept busy on the top table and Miss Burridge was constantly overseeing the competition and announcing the running order over the PA, this along with Salli & Nicky updating the information on the screen, meant that everyone was kept well informed and prepared for their next event.  Mr and Mrs Richards and the umpires and event staff worked super hard to keep the rings running smoothly. Many thanks to you all.

The competition finished surprisingly early and we were soon back on our coach and heading home, a little tired but all happy after a successful day.

SGTKD had eleven students competing and between them they brought home 20 medals :- 7 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze. A great result, well done to you all!

Our next trip will be back down to Paignton for the South West Open Championships in April and we are certainly looking forward to it, so, we will see you there!
