South East Region at the Welsh Championships View all articles
Comments: 2With over 40 competitors and as many spectators it was decided that the South East region would need a coach to take its'' troops up to Wales this year. It took three pick up points to round everyone up and then we were on our way. On arriving at the venue it became very clear that this was the biggest Welsh Competition so far. The coach driver had trouble parking and the spectators struggled to find somewhere to sit due to the popularity of the competition.
The Seniors started the tournament off with Black Belt patterns and the Adults soon followed. Straight away our medal tally began to roll. Now the competition was in full swing as more rings opened and more sections completed their patterns. The typical South East region support was present throughout as competitors and spectators cheered each other on. Our youngest spectator was also present; Mason Hamdy, at close to 3 months, he dribbled his way through the proceedings.
As pattern categories finished, sparring categories started up with ring side weigh ins. Congratulations to those students who moved from cadets to juniors and juniors to adults in a bid to start their 2012 World Championship campaigns. All important points were gained but most important was the experience gained from competing at the next level.
It proved to be a long day with many categories finishing way into the night, the medal tally of the region however, was well worth. Finally, the last fight was fought, the ring boxes were packed away and it was time to get back on the coach and go home.
A long day, yes, but definitely a great day. We did well as a region, World Championship hopefuls gained points and experience, and friendships were enforced or indeed made. Days like these are tough on everybody;competitiors, officials, and spectators but , I believe that it makes everybody appreciate each other more. Well done to everybody and thank you!!
